Vehicle crime is a massive problem in San Francisco. Car break-ins
and auto theft are extremely common, and the problem has gotten
worse in recent years. The goal of this project is to educate people
on where and when vehicle crime is most likely to occur. I used San
Francisco Police Department data to create visualizations that
examine the problem. I would like to answer the questions:
Where are the most dangerous places to park your car in San
Francisco?
When is the most dangerous time to park your car in public
By answering these questions, I hope this project can be utilized as
a tool by San Francisco residents to make safer and more informed
decisions with where they leave their cars. I also chose to
visualize this data because San Francisco vehicle is a problem that
has affected my family, my friends, and me. I have had my car broken
into with luggage I had packed for a trip inside. When I got back to
my car, all the luggage was stolen. I filed a police report, but
nothing came out of it. This project is meant to bring more
attention to this problem, and to see the trends and areas in which
it is most common. I hope this tool will help people think about
where they park their car and what they leave in it to reduce the
number of incidents.
This website also highlights the process I went through to develop
the data visualizations. The visualizations are updated to show the
last 30 months of data. You can find information on the data set on
the data tab, see my alpha and beta
prototypes on the prototypes tab, then
view the final product on the
visualizations tab.
